18/10/1972 Sofia Bulgaria 0-3

Pat Jennings, Pat Rice, Sammy Nelson, Allan Hunter, Terry Neill, Dave Clements, Bryan Hamilton (Sammy Morgan), Danny Hegan, Eric McMordie, Derek Dougan, George Best

Played on a difficult surface after days of torrential rain, Bonev scored from the penalty spot on 18, Kolev added the 2nd on 53. After vowing to retire and missing the Home Internationals, George Best was back in the Irish team but was sent off on 85 for a foul in the box, Bonev then netted his 2nd spot kick. Terry Neill’s verdict was that it was “a sad day for football with this travesty of justice. “We owe it to the fans to make up for that. It was poor to say the least.”
