07th October – Today In Our Footballing History

07/10/2006 Copenhagen Denmark 0-0

Maik Taylor, Michael Duff, Aaron Hughes, Stephen Craigan, Chris Baird, Sammy Clingan (Damien Johnson), Steven Davis, Jonathan Evans, Keith Gillespie, Kyle Lafferty (Steve Jones), David Healy (Warren Feeney)

Lawrie Sanchez –

“It was a superb team performance, everybody was outstanding,” said Sanchez after the 0-0 draw. But that is the easy part of the four days, the hardest comes when we play Latvia in Belfast. We played for the fans. They gave us fantastic support and the lads have given them something to celebrate.”

“They put us under pressure but we hung in there and showed some character and grit,” said Hughes after winning his 50th cap. We have come away from a difficult match with a point which is good. Jonny Evans has come in and proved he can play at this level. He did that against Spain in the last match and cemented that tonight. The fans were superb for us too and I hope they have a good night.”

Aaron Hughes –

“We want to qualify for a major championship and to do that we’ve got to come to places like this and pick up points. We came here looking to get at least a point and we’ve done that. We hung in there and showed a lot of character and grit. We know there’s a long way to go but know we’re capable. The young lads are already playing above their years and when you combine that with the experience of some of the other boys, we have a chance.”
