17/08/2005 Ta’Qali Malta 1-1 David Healy
Maik Taylor, Keith Gillespie, Stephen Craigan, Colin Murdock, Aaron Hughes, Damien Johnson, Steven Davis (Phillip Mulryne), Jeff Whitley (Steve Jones), Stuart Elliott (Chris Brunt), David Healy, James Quinn (Warren Feeney)
David Healy added another strike to his international record within ten minutes before Ivan Woods equalised for the home side before the break.
Woods ended an eventful night as he was dismissed along with Keith Gillespie on 77 minutes for violent conduct after the Maltese player took exception to a bad tackle from Gillespie on Cohen, before Maik Taylor spared Northern Ireland’s blushes by saving a last minute penalty from Mallia.
* Trivia –
Prior to kick-off both teams observed a one minute silence in respect of former Malta goalkeeper David Cluett who passed away the previous month.
Lawrie Sanchez (Northern Ireland Manager) –
“We did not win because we did not perform as we can. The Malta lad scored an unbelievable goal and if you give teams chances someone is going to take one. I take full responsibility for our poor display in the first half. If we had lost the match I would have been bitterly disappointed.”
“What I saw was Keith kicking the ball back when a free-kick was awarded and then there was a fracas. It is a shame he got involved but to be fair to Keith, he is a lad who plays with a lot of heart and commitment when he puts the shirt on. We have not always seen eye to eye, especially in my earlier days, but he is a full-blooded player and one of our better performers against Malta.”
