This was the first of Northern Ireland’s four match tour down under. Chris Nicholl fired in a 35 yarder on 11 to put the current British Champions ahead and Martin O’Neill headed in from a corner for 2-0 on 52. Peter Sharne netted a consolation for the hosts on 74.
Jimmy Nicholl – “… Billy Bingham took us on a tour of Australia where, he set down the ground rules. As we flew into each city we were sent straight to our beds and all we did was train, play and sleep. We weren’t allowed days off and a few of the boys, myself included, were less than happy … He established what he wanted early on and no-one argued with him.”

IRELAND’S WEAKNESS IN ATTACK: EARLY ADVANTAGE LOST
The Times – Thursday 12th June
HALMSTAD, June 11. – After McParland had given them the lead within five minutes, Northern Ireland tumbled to defeat here to-night – largely because of weaknesses in attack. But they can still qualify for the quarter-finals if they beat the holders, West Germany, on Sunday.
McParland, McIlroy, Bingham, and Blanchflower tried every trick in the book in an effort to beat the fast, elusive Argentines. The main failure was at centre-forward, where Coyle rarely got into his stride. The little inside-right, Cush, also had an off day.
A penalty for handling by Cunningham led to Argentina’s equalizing goal by Corbatta. This knocked much of the fight out of the Irish team, and though they struggled on gallantly in the second half they were outplayed by clever ball players, whose passing was admirable. Menendez and Boggio both scored in a six minute spell early in the second half to clinch a victory Argentina deserved.
