The match was moved from Windsor Park to Craven Cottage, Fulham due to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Manchester United winger Trevor Anderson made a sensational international debut by netting two goals. Sammy Morgan gave the Irish an early lead on 4 mins, Anderson scored his first on 33 and added another just before HT.

Pat Jennings was awarded the Footballer of the Year trophy less than a week earlier. One match stood out among the rest that season when at Anfield Pat saved two penalties, one from Kevin Keegan and another from Tommy Smith.
