06/05/1969 Glasgow Scotland 1-1 Eric McMordie
Pat Jennings, Dave Craig, Alex Elder, Sammy Todd, Terry Neill, Jimmy Nicholson, Eric McMordie, Derek Dougan, Tommy Jackson, Dave Clements, George Best
An attendance of 7,483 was recorded for this match, still the lowest ever recorded at todays Hampden Park (there has been three different incarnations, the current location opening in 1903) for an international football match, largely because the match was broadcast live on TV as well as the wet weather.
Eric McMordie gave the visitors the lead on 11 minutes, Colin Stein equalised on 53. George Best had what looked like a perfectly good goal disallowed. The Northern Ireland team had every right to question why the referee disallowed this George Best goal at Hampden Park. The referee assumed that the ball had struck Best on the hand so gave a freekick to Scotland. The clip below shows that the ball was controlled by Best’s thigh.
Billy Bingham (Northern Ireland Manager) – “I am astonished that we had a goal disallowed in the second half. There seemed nothing wrong with Best’s effort.”
