Ireland had a three nil success against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park with Andy Gara of Preston North End scoring a hat-trick. However, this was not the first hat-trick scored by an Irish player in an international match. That honour went to William Dalton who scored three goals in the seven two win over Wales in 1891.
